SMART & ROKKE WRITE-IN CANDIDATES

If you watched the visitor presentation at the October 12, 2009 Maplewood City Council
meeting, you already know this – Ken Smart and DelRay Rokke have decided to run as
official write-in candidates in the November 3, 2009 general election!   Ken will be
running as a write-in candidate for mayor and DelRay is running as a write-in candidate
for city council.

Ken says, “I respect Diana Longrie and believe she does not always get the credit
deserved for what she has done for the city.  If you support Diana, I encourage you to
vote for her!   Will Rossbach has devoted 20 years of public service to Maplewood city
government.  I also respect Will’s dedication and service.  If you support Will, please
vote for him.”

However, if you are not happy with the direction of Maplewood, the team of Hafner,
Rokke and Smart offers a real choice . . . and a real difference!

According to Ken, “there is much dissatisfaction in our city.  Spending and taxes are too
high (see Ken’s page on this website for some factual data), services often fall short,
long term financial needs have not been planned for, past revenue streams have been
wasted with little to show for it and probably most frustrating to many, we have too little
accountability on the part of our city staff.   Let me be clear – I know many of our city
civil servants and everyone I know is a good employee.   The dissatisfaction comes from
a lack of leadership on the part of our current council and mayor – not from a lack of
ability or desire of our city employees.”

The people we seek to represent are the hard working citizen taxpayers in our city.   We
will represent those that pay too much in property taxes that go up EVERY year even
though many have not seen a pay increase for two years or more.   The ones that
continue to care for their homes and properties – even though they may have been out of
work for many months.   The single mother who finds a way to put food on the table
every single day even though she may go without eating the last three days of the month
just so her kids can eat.  The father who scrapes together enough extra dollars so his son
or daughter can continue to participate in extra curricular activities even though it means
he will wear three sweatshirts this winter because he cannot afford a new coat.   We
represent the 80+ year Maplewood resident who still wants to enjoy an outdoor
marshmallow roast with his grandchildren.  We represent the resident business owner
who provides jobs, contributes to charitable organizations in the city, and still pays some
of the highest property taxes in the metro area.

We do not represent special interests.   We do not represent a political party.  We do not
represent those that live outside the city of Maplewood.  We represent the average
taxpayer citizen.  It is time to celebrate you, respect you and time for city government to
give you a bit more liberty, a bit more fiscal discipline, and just a bit more happiness.
When we achieve this, then we will have made a difference.

If you truly want change, mark the oval for Dave Hafner, write-in DelRay Rokke for city
council and write-in Ken Smart for mayor.
