State of the Union

There is a perception that the city of Maplewood is split in two. We hear a lot about
“north” Maplewood and “south” Maplewood. And the representation that each yearns
for. But this schism is contrived.
I happen to live in the southern end. And yes, issues in my neighborhood motivated me to
get involved in Maplewood politics. Yet the issues that arose in my neighborhood are not
indemic to the south. They exist throughout the entire city of Maplewood.
There are those who seem to be creating a “civil war” in our city. I believe part of the
reason is political in nature. Northern Maplewood is higher in it's population density. If
one can convince the citizens that the north and south are “at war,” it would certainly favor
any candidate that lives in the north. Especially at the voting poles.
I did not get into politics because of the location of my residence, nor am I running for
council to solely represent the south. Our great country has had one civil war. We don't
need another. And what about central Maplewood? Or those who live in the east or west?
We must shed this continual reference to the north and south. It is time to rid ourselves of
the Mason-Dixon Line once and for all. And work for the betterment of our entire city,
and each and everyone in it.
The next time you find  yourself referring to the north or the south, try to catch yourself,
and see if you cannot bring yourself to consider the interests of everyone-and our entire
city. It is time to “unite” Maplewood, and the citizens that live in it.
